Increasing Electricity Production in South Korea

South Korea is going in a big way to increase energy production to meet the growing demands of energy in the country. According to a recent report by ministry of Energy in the coming 12 years South Korea is planning to invest more than US$28 billion in domestic energy sector to boost its energy production. Under this new energy plan it is planning to build 12 new nuclear plants, 11 LNG plants and one heavy fuel plant by 2022. To increase the fuel efficiency and reduce emissions it is also getting rid of three existing coal plants, six LNG plants and 13 heavy fuel units.

According to the ministry report กฐ"The plan is to generate more low carbon power while decreasing the use of high-priced reserves such as LNG and coal. Under the plan, the fuel cost will be about 56 percent lower than this year. " With the plan the total number of nuclear power units will rise to 32, (32.92 million kilowatts) by 2022 and account for 48 percent of the country's total power generation. Currently south Korea is getting around 34 percent of its energy from nuclear plants.

The plan also aims to reduce the share of LNG in power generation form current 22 percent to 6 percent by 2022.With this new investment Korea is expected to upgrade its overall electricity power generation capacity 100.89 million kilowatts by 2022, from 71.36 million by end-2008
